Formentera, May 28, 2024
After a month since the decision of the Governing Board of the Consell Insular de Formentera to award the concessions of the beach bars to the highest-rated companies in the contest, yesterday I decided to visit the location of all the old beach kiosks.
The conclusion is that in none of them there are movements that indicate that soon, Formentera will have beach kiosks again. The areas where these mythical establishments used to be are deserted, with no signs of preparation for the installation of the new beach bars.
We are almost at the end of May and I see it very difficult for them to be ready and in service by mid-June, as initially implied. The absence of activity in the planned locations suggests that the initially expected deadlines may not be met.
Being beach bars such a deeply ingrained element in the memory of regular visitors to Formentera, it is leading many of them to comment that the feeling this summer in Formentera is nothing like what was experienced until 2023, as the beach kiosks were an annual meeting point with friends for many of them.
The sense of abandonment that residents and frequent visitors experience, due to not being able to rely on this service so deeply rooted in the tradition of Formentera summers, has led anonymous individuals to create memorial spaces in places where the most emblematic beach bars used to be located, such as the Pirata Bus, Kiosk 62, the Lucky, and Cala Saona beach bar.
Customs and habits that go beyond the beach kiosks itself lead many residents and regular visitors to maintain the location of the old beach bars as a meeting point. As an example, it is common to come across the same familiar faces playing their games of “extreme petanque” at sunset on the rocks where the old Pirata Bus was located.
We understand that the difficult circumstances in which the new concessionaires find themselves to meet deadlines are by no means easy, and they are the first ones interested in opening as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, residents and visitors, we have no choice but to be patient, waiting to see the silhouette of the new beach bars appear in Formentera, and likewise maintain hope that the concept of management and business style will not be very different from what we have known for so many years.
For those of us who love Formentera and enjoy its beaches, the beach bars are not just beach businesses; they are an integral part of our life on the island. We miss the good times shared with friends, the laughter, and the beers that have been such an important part of our experience for so many years.
As for me, I will be keeping an eye out for any news related to the installation of the new beach bars in Formentera. I will continue updating this blog with new posts to keep readers informed as relevant data or information emerges.
I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
