The regulation of vehicle access to Formentera during<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0the summer months is once again sparking controversy after a case came to light involving a citizen whose wages are being partially garnished over a fine that, he claims, was notified out of time. The situation has reopened the debate about how the control system operates and about the administrative timeframes involved in processing this type of case file.<\/p>\n

The events date back to the summer of 2021, when the driver entered the island with his vehicle without applying for the mandatory authorization. At the time, he says he was unaware that he needed to request the permit through the platform set up to regulate vehicle entry during the high season.<\/p>\n

However, the fine was not communicated to him until several years later. An infringement in 2021<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The infringement occurred in August 2021, when the vehicle entry regulation system through formentera.eco was already in force. The driver entered the island without the mandatory authorization, an offense considered serious. He maintains that the Administration had a two-year period to notify the penalty, but the communication did not reach him until May 2024. He therefore submitted objections on the grounds that the procedure had been processed out of time.<\/p>\n

After lodging the appeal, he waited for a response that never arrived. Months later, he received a notice of garnishment for the \u20ac1,000 fine plus the corresponding interest. Although he again requested that the process be suspended until a final ruling was issued, he received no reply and the garnishment began to be applied monthly to his salary. Thousands of reports and pending case files<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Island Council recently reported that in 2024, 546 vehicles were fined for entering the island without authorization. In addition, more than 3,300 reports corresponding to that year remained in the processing phase, and several dozen proceedings were closed.<\/p>\n

During the regulation period, nearly 3,900 inspection reports were issued, highlighting the scale of the control measures carried out. As for 2025, the institution states that no new sanctioning proceedings have yet been initiated, with the aim of properly managing the accumulated volume and improving the system in collaboration with the tax authorities.<\/p>\n

The offense of driving without a permit is subject to a two-year statute of limitations, a key factor in claims such as the one raised in this case.<\/p>\n

In addition, following the inquiry I made just yesterday on the matter, and provided there are no changes to the plan, the Consell Insular de Formentera intends to open permit applications from mid-April. It is therefore advisable to keep an eye on the deadlines and make the reservation well in advance to avoid setbacks.<\/p>\n
