Two Fire Incidents

Emergency Services on Alert

Formentera’s emergency services were called into action over the weekend to deal with two separate fire-related incidents in different parts of the island. Although both events caused concern among residents and witnesses, neither resulted in any injuries.

The first emergency call came from the island’s port, where a moored yacht caught fire on Saturday night. Hours later, on Sunday afternoon, another fire incident affected a restaurant located in the es Copinar area.

In both cases, the swift response of those present, together with the intervention of the Consell de Formentera Fire Brigade, brought the situations under control before the flames could cause more serious damage.

Both the authorities and the emergency teams inspected the affected areas to ensure there was no remaining risk, bringing both operations to a close without any injuries being reported.

Fire on a Moored Yacht

The first incident took place on Friday, July 3, just a few minutes before 11:00 p.m., when the 112 emergency service received a report of a fire on a leisure yacht moored in the port.
Firefighters from the Consell de Formentera responded with a light response vehicle and two fire engines. They located the source of the fire on the yacht’s deck, specifically in one of its cabins, from where the flames spread.

After extinguishing the fire, firefighters carried out a thermal imaging inspection to ensure there were no remaining hot spots and ventilated the yacht’s interior using positive-pressure ventilation.
Officers from the Local Police and the Guardia Civil also took part in the operation. The intervention concluded at around 2:00 a.m., allowing the vessels that had temporarily left the port to return and be repositioned.

According to several eyewitnesses, the fire may have originated from a refrigerator installed inside the yacht. The blaze caused significant material damage to one of the cabins and part of the vessel’s bridge.

Hotel Maryland Staff

The second incident occurred during the afternoon of Sunday, July 5, at the Maryland dining area, located in the es Copinar area.
For reasons that had not yet been determined, a fire broke out in the wiring of the air conditioning system located on the building’s rooftop. The blaze produced a thick column of black smoke that was visible from the beach, alerting many people in the area.

The establishment’s staff reacted immediately after spotting the flames. After notifying the emergency services, they used several fire extinguishers to contain the fire and successfully put it out before firefighters arrived.
By the time crews from the Consell de Formentera reached the scene, the fire was already fully under control. Their work focused on inspecting the affected installation to confirm there was no risk of the fire reigniting.

No Injuries Reported

Despite the close timing of both incidents and the mobilisation of the emergency services, neither fire resulted in any injuries.
The prompt response of the Consell de Formentera Fire Brigade, along with the staff at the es Copinar establishment in one case and the workers at La Savina port in the other, proved crucial in preventing more serious consequences and limiting the material damage caused by both incidents.
