Safety Measures for the Eclipse

Road Closures

The Consell Insular de Formentera will activate a comprehensive special safety operation on Wednesday, 12 August, the day of the total solar eclipse, in response to an event expected to attract a large number of residents and visitors to different parts of the island.

The main objective of the operation is to coordinate all the services involved to guarantee public safety, preserve emergency response capacity, and ensure that emergency services can respond as quickly as possible should any incident occur.

The operation will involve officers from the Formentera Local Police, the Guardia Civil, the Guardia Civil Traffic Division, Bombers de Formentera, Civil Protection, the Consell de Formentera Lifeguard Service, technicians from the Balearic Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies, Agents de Medi Ambient (AMA), and staff from IBIFOR and IBANAT.

In addition, the Consell will deploy around ten volunteers to assist with parking management and provide support throughout the operation. The plan will include an extraordinary reinforcement of the various emergency and security services, all of which will work in coordination throughout the day.

Cap de Barbaria Road Closed

The main measure will be the closure of the road to Cap de Barbaria, from its junction with the Cala Saona road, between 4:00 p.m. and midnight.
During this period, access will only be permitted for authorised vehicles and residents of the affected area, who must provide proof of residence by presenting their ID card or the corresponding documentation.
This restriction is essential to ensure the safety of those attending and to keep the road to Cap de Barbaria clear as an emergency access corridor, allowing emergency services to respond quickly to any incident.
For this reason, the Consell advises the public to plan their journeys well in advance throughout Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Enhanced Surveillance Across the Island

The surveillance operation will be active between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with mobile patrols covering the entire island to ensure a rapid response to any incident.
Surveillance will be particularly reinforced at the main locations where large crowds are expected to gather during the day.
The Local Police will also strengthen the operation with aerial surveillance using a drone, enabling better monitoring of crowds and facilitating the early detection of any incidents.

Meanwhile, the Lifeguard Service will expand its operation with a night-time surveillance boat.
The heads of the different services will work in coordination from an operations centre that will be set up at the Formentera Local Police headquarters.
At the same time, the Consell Insular de Formentera has organised a special event at the far des cap de Barbaria, which will only be accessible via a shuttle bus service.

Departures from Sant Francesc will take place at 5:45 p.m., 6:00 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 6:50 p.m., with a total of 440 seats available, all of which have already been booked.

Mercat de la Mola Closed

In conjunction with this special operation, the Mercat de la Mola and the far de la Mola will remain closed throughout Wednesday in order to prevent large-scale travel and simultaneous crowd gatherings at different locations across the island.
To compensate for this exceptional closure, artisans will be allowed to set up their stalls on the Friday of the same week.

Recommendations for the Public

The Consell Insular de Formentera asks for the public’s cooperation to ensure the operation runs smoothly and recommends the following:

• Plan your journeys well in advance.
• Respect the closure of the road to Cap de Barbaria and the established access restrictions.
• Arrive early at the designated viewing locations.
• Bring water, sun protection, and suitable clothing for the high temperatures.
• Follow the instructions of the security forces, emergency services, and volunteers at all times.
• Park only in designated parking areas and avoid leaving vehicles outside authorised zones.
