Es Caló de Sant Agustí will once again celebrate one of the most cherished events on its festive calendar this Saturday, 29 August. The small village of Formentera will honour its patron saint, Sant Agustí, keeping alive a tradition that brings locals and visitors together to enjoy folk culture, music and a strong sense of community.

As usual, the celebration will take place on the last Saturday in August, regardless of whether or not it falls on the exact date of the saint’s feast day. In this way, Es Caló preserves a tradition that allows everyone to enjoy all the events over the course of a single festive day.

This year, the Associació Cultural Es Pastorells will be responsible for organising the activities. The programme will combine the religious side of the festivities with ball pagès, traditional food and live music, all against the unique seaside backdrop of Es Caló.

The festivities will also help support traditional culture. During the celebration, there will be a bar serving drinks and sandwiches, with all proceeds going towards supporting Es Pastorells financially and helping the association continue its work.

Festivities Programme

The programme will begin at 7.00 pm with a musical Mass sung by the choir of the Pilar parish, maintaining the religious element of this patron saint celebration.
At 8.00 pm, the Es Xacoters and Es Pastorells colles will give a traditional dance performance. Ball pagès and Formentera’s folk music will take centre stage in one of the most representative moments of the day.

At 8.30 pm, everyone will be invited to enjoy bunyols, orelletes, sweet wine and hierbas, bringing traditional local flavours to the festivities.
Finally, at 9.30 pm, Esta me la sé will take to the stage, bringing a livelier atmosphere to the evening. The drinks and sandwich bar will also remain open throughout the celebration, with all proceeds going to Es Pastorells.

Es Pastorells, 50 Years of History

The Associació Cultural Es Pastorells is one of the groups closely involved in preserving and promoting Formentera’s traditional heritage. Its balladors and sonadors regularly take part in popular celebrations across the island and frequently perform alongside Es Xacoters.
The association brings together different generations and keeps traditional dances, music, clothing and instruments alive. Its story began in 1976, at the Mestre Lluís Andreu school in Sant Francesc, as an initiative designed to teach younger generations the traditions of their elders.

To mark its 50th anniversary, Es Pastorells was awarded the Gold Medal of Formentera on 24 July, the island’s highest distinction. Presented during the official Diada de Formentera celebrations, the award recognised five decades of dedication to preserving, promoting and passing on the island’s cultural heritage.
The Sant Agustí festivities will provide another opportunity to support this work, as the money raised from the sale of drinks and sandwiches will help fund the association and ensure its activities can continue.

Music to Sing and Dance Along To

Esta me la sé is an Ibiza-based band formed in 2010 that blends a variety of musical styles. Their sound incorporates influences from pop, rock, electronic music and reggae, although much of their appeal comes from performing songs that audiences know and love.
Their repertoire focuses particularly on Spanish music from the 2000s to the present day and includes covers of bands and artists such as La Oreja de Van Gogh, Estopa, El Canto del Loco and Fito y Fitipaldis.

In Es Caló, audiences can look forward to a concert made for singing and dancing along. The band will combine their own songs with well-known covers from the Spanish music scene, providing the soundtrack to the final part of the celebration.

A Celebration Well Worth Experiencing

Personally, I believe the Sant Agustí festivities in Es Caló are a perfect reflection of the character of Formentera’s traditional celebrations. Their charm lies precisely in their small scale, friendly atmosphere and blend of tradition, local food, music and village life.
All of this takes place in a setting that is hard to beat. Es Caló de Sant Agustí, with its seafaring character and privileged location by the sea, provides a beautiful backdrop for enjoying an intimate celebration just a few metres from the Mediterranean.

Year after year, the last Saturday in August is a wonderful opportunity to visit Es Caló and take part in a simple, traditional and authentic celebration. In 2026, it will also provide the chance to support Es Pastorells and help ensure the continuity of Formentera’s folk culture.
