Formentera mira al cel

Astronomy Season 2025

Formentera, June 2, 2025

In addition to its beaches and natural landscapes, Formentera also offers a privileged window to observe the cosmos. The island has become a benchmark in astrotourism thanks to its clear skies, free from light pollution, and its commitment to sustainability. In 2025, a new edition of the “Formentera mira al cel” program returns with a proposal that invites both residents and visitors to look up and marvel at the universe.

The initiative, promoted by the Consell Insular de Formentera and the Associació Astronòmica de Formentera, includes a series of activities that combine scientific outreach with astronomical observation.
It’s a unique opportunity to learn about the solar system and to contemplate celestial objects that usually go unnoticed by the naked eye.

The program will kick off on June 7 with a special day of talks and telescope observation.

Since 2023, Formentera has held the prestigious “Starlight Tourist Destination” certification, an international recognition that validates its suitability for stargazing and its commitment to preserving the nocturnal natural environment.

Astronomical Association of Formentera

Founded in 2019, the Astronomical Association of Formentera is the driving force behind these activities. Its team, made up of local residents passionate about observing the night sky, has further improved its observation equipment compared to previous years, allowing for more immersive and educational experiences.
With the motto “sharing the passion for astronomy,” the association aims to bring the universe closer to everyone—from amateur astronomers to families with children, and tourists interested in taking part in this kind of event.

Formentera: Starlight Tourist Destination

The Starlight certification, obtained in May 2023, places Formentera on the map of the best places in the world to admire the night sky. This recognition not only highlights the quality of its sky but also the institutional commitment to protecting the nocturnal environment.
Thanks to this accreditation, further measures have been implemented to reduce light pollution, local awareness initiatives have been strengthened, and astrotourism has been consolidated as a strategic pillar of the island’s sustainable development.

A window to the universe from Formentera

The 2025 astronomy program will begin on June 7 with an educational talk about the solar system at the Casa del Poble in La Mola, starting at 6:30 p.m. This presentation will offer an overview of the planets, their characteristics, and Earth’s position in the universe.
From 9:30 p.m., the evening will continue with an observation session around the Molí Vell de la Mola, an area specially protected from excessive artificial lighting. There, attendees will be able to explore the Moon in detail and observe deep-sky treasures such as the Whirlpool Galaxy and the Hercules Cluster.
The activity is free, but spots are limited, so prior registration is required by emailing turisme@formentera.es

I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
