Formentera Beaches 2026

Formentera, May 1, 2026

The Consell Insular de Formentera has activated, as of today, May 1, the lifeguard service on the island’s main beaches. This measure is part of the plan designed to strengthen safety during the current 2026 tourist season.

The initiative is complemented by the launch of the Local Police surveillance service starting on May 3. With both measures, the island authority aims to ensure a safer and more orderly summer for both residents and visitors.

The operation begins in an initial phase on some of the most crowded sandy beaches. In addition, the Consell plans to progressively increase staffing throughout May to ensure full coverage for the entire season.

The 2025 campaign delivered very positive results in terms of safety, with a significant reduction in incidents. These figures now serve as a benchmark to consolidate a model focused on prevention and coordination.

Lifeguards on the main beaches

The lifeguard service begins today at ses Illetes, Llevant, es Arenals, cala Saona and es Pujols. In this initial phase, operating hours are set from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The operation starts with a team of 15 professionals. However, the Consell plans to reinforce the workforce at the end of May to ensure broader coverage until October 31.

Likewise, the Consell highlighted that the 2025 season was especially positive in terms of coastal safety. According to recorded data, there were no fatal drowning victims and incidents were notably reduced.
During that summer, 723 medical assistances, 58 water rescues and 561 preventive actions were recorded. These figures reflected a significant decrease compared to the previous year.

From the island authority, they point out that these results confirmed the effectiveness of a model based on prevention, coordination between services and the rapid response capacity of emergency teams.
They also emphasized the increase in public awareness regarding coastal safety, a key factor in reducing risks.

Fixed police surveillance point

The Consell is also reinstating the beach police surveillance service, with a fixed point at ses Illetes, within the Parc Natural de ses Salines.
The operation includes a permanent patrol made up of two or three officers, a vehicle, two motorcycles, a jet ski and a booth that serves as an operational base. This service is provided daily between May and September during peak hours.

Irregular activities in 2025

The Local Police played a key role last year in reducing unauthorized activities, such as street vending. In 2024, 132 reports were filed, while in 2025 this figure dropped to 39.
This decrease represented a reduction of 70.4%. Moreover, this improvement was also observed in particularly sensitive areas such as the Parc Natural de ses Salines, Migjorn or cala Saona.

The surveillance model focuses on information and deterrence as its main tools. This strategy helps reduce conflict and improve the perception of safety.
Both beachgoers and businesses in the tourism sector benefit from a system designed to regulate activity along Formentera’s coastline throughout the summer season.
