A young tourist was seriously injured on Monday, August 17, after becoming involved in a fight at the port of La Savina in Formentera. The incident took place shortly after 2 p.m. and prompted a response from bystanders, Local Police officers and emergency medical services.
The altercation involved two young men who were part of a group of eight friends who had travelled from Ibiza to Formentera to spend the day on the island. During the argument, and for reasons that remain unclear, one of them pushed the other, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head hard.
The young man’s condition later deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest. The swift intervention of Local Police officers and medical personnel managed to restore the victim’s pulse, and he was eventually evacuated to Ibiza for specialist medical treatment.
Local Police arrested the alleged assailant after several bystanders restrained him when he reportedly tried to leave the scene. Officers arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder and subsequently handed him over to the Guardia Civil, which took over the investigation into the incident.
Fight in La Savina
The incident occurred at around 2 p.m. at the port of La Savina, one of the main points of arrival and departure for travellers to and from Formentera. The two young men involved were part of the same group of eight friends who had travelled from Ibiza intending to spend the day on the island.
For reasons that were not immediately clear, the two became involved in a fight. During the altercation, one of the young men pushed the other. The victim lost his balance, fell to the ground and hit his head hard.
The young man remained lying on the ground after suffering a serious head injury, and his condition caused considerable concern among those who witnessed the incident.
Resuscitation efforts
The Consell de Formentera reported that Local Police received an emergency call at around 2.15 p.m. alerting them that a person had gone into cardiac arrest at the port of La Savina.
A patrol immediately rushed to the scene and found the young man in cardiac arrest. Given the seriousness of the situation, the officers began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
SAMU 061 medical personnel arrived shortly afterwards, took over from the officers and continued resuscitation efforts. They eventually managed to restore the young man’s pulse.
Transferred to Ibiza
Once the victim had been stabilised, emergency services arranged for him to be evacuated from Formentera to Ibiza so that he could receive specialist medical care.
The young man was transferred to the Neurology Unit of a private hospital in Ibiza, where he was admitted in a serious condition.
Initial reports indicated that the cardiac arrest occurred following the assault. However, the investigation will have to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and establish whether there was a link between the head injury he sustained in the fall and the subsequent deterioration in his condition.
Restrained by bystanders
While emergency services were treating the injured man, a second Formentera Local Police patrol headed to the port to assist with the incident.
On their way there, officers located the alleged assailant nearby. A large group of bystanders who had witnessed what happened had restrained him after he reportedly tried to flee the scene following the incident.
Officers then arrested the young man on suspicion of attempted murder and took him into police custody.
The Guardia Civil took over the investigation in order to reconstruct what happened, determine what triggered the fight and establish any potential criminal liability arising from the assault.
