The Consell Insular of Formentera has issued a temporary closure of the path connecting es Copinar with caló des Mort, in the Migjorn area, due to damage caused by the heavy storm that hit the island on October 11. The measure has been taken as a precaution against the risk of land collapse and rockfalls identified by emergency teams.
According to the institution, the rain caused land movements and a significant loss of ground support in several areas along the southern coast of the island. Technical inspections confirmed that the path surface has been seriously affected, compromising the safety of pedestrians in the area.
The president of the Consell, Óscar Portas, signed the closure decree following the recommendations of the fire department and emergency services. The goal is to prevent potential accidents while damage is assessed and the necessary repairs are planned to restore the stability of the land.
In addition to the closure of this section, the Consell Insular has ordered the sealing off of two other areas in Migjorn that were also affected by the rainfall. These restrictions will remain in place until the Environment and Coastal technicians complete their reports and determine the necessary restoration measures.
Risk of Collapse and Rockfalls
The report prepared by the Formentera fire department has identified several points along the coast with a high risk of collapse and falling rocks. In the case of the path between es Copinar and caló des Mort, a significant loss of ground has been detected, directly affecting the path and the surrounding coastal margins.
Emergency teams have cordoned off the area to prevent access and avoid accidents. The terrain, eroded by the rainwater, has developed unstable sections and cracks that require urgent intervention before it can be reopened to the public.
Migjorn and Racó de S´Alga
The Consell has also reported the closure of two additional coastal areas for safety reasons. The first is located on Migjorn beach, near the Real Playa restaurant, where the wooden walkway sustained damage due to a loss of ground support, as it runs over a streambed and the volume and force of water on October 11 was considerable.
The second is in the Mal Pas area heading toward Racó de s’Alga, where landslides and falling rocks have been recorded on the slope leading down to the beach, posing a high risk of collapse.
At both sites, technicians have installed safety tape and warning signs, asking the public to respect the restrictions while assessment work is carried out.
Technical Assessment and Restoration
The Environment and Coastal Services have taken on the task of reviewing the extent of the damage and defining the necessary recovery measures. Planned repairs include soil stabilization, replacement of damaged structures, and prevention of future rockfalls.
The Consell has thanked residents and visitors for their cooperation and reminded everyone of the importance of following safety guidelines to protect both people and the natural environment. Access to the affected areas will remain restricted until technical reports are completed.
