Political Crisis in Formentera
Formentera, December 12, 2023
One of the many consequences of the current situation in Formentera, caused by the ongoing political crisis at the Consell Insular de Formentera, is that the president, Llorenç Córdoba, is also in charge of the coastal area. The decision on how to proceed with the beach kiosk competition for the upcoming 2024 summer season falls on him.
The Procurement department of the Consell de Formentera previously requested a legal report from the University-Business Foundation of the UIB to explore possible alternatives regarding the last tender for these beach businesses. According to recent reports in the Diario de Ibiza, the findings of the report do not provide entirely satisfactory solutions.
As mentioned in the newspaper, if the best-rated proposals from the last competition are chosen as concessionaires for 2024, there is a risk of challenge from those who ranked second or third due to the delay in the awarding process and the extension of the contract to the previous holders.
The second option, suggesting a new competition, may also be detrimental to the economic interests of the Consell de Formentera, as the institution could face indemnity claims from individuals and companies that have already deposited bonds. These claims could be submitted judicially, arguing damages and harm caused by the previous resolution.
Since last November, the beach kiosk concessionaires in Formentera have been forced to dismantle their installations, leaving the island without any of these structures along its entire coastline. Consequently, the valued service for both visitors and residents is no longer available.
The decision made by the Consell de Formentera has left tourists who have visited Formentera in previous summers and residents who enjoy the beach kiosk service in suspense. It is not a minor issue, and we believe that the circumstances surrounding these businesses for the summer season of 2024 should be clarified as soon as possible.

I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
