Vehicle Access Control Formentera 2024
Formentera, April 11, 2024
Since April 9th, you can request the temporary circulation permit for your vehicle from June 1st to September 30th, 2024. The request is made through the official platform of the Consell Insular de Formentera, www.formentera.eco
This procedure will allow you to drive around the island with your vehicle during the high season months. It’s a quick and simple process designed to ensure orderly and respectful circulation, limiting the maximum number of vehicles that circulate daily in Formentera during the summer months.
The measure enacted by the Consell de Formentera sets a maximum number of vehicles that will circulate per day on the island, as well as the price of the fee applied according to the type of vehicle and the requested days and dates of circulation.
This measure aims to control traffic volume on the island and preserve the fragile natural environment of Formentera.
If you intend to travel with your car or motorcycle to Formentera during your vacation, you must be aware that you need to apply for a temporary circulation permit from the Consell Insular de Formentera beforehand. The number of vehicles granted permission is limited, so our recommendation is to request it as soon as you have your Formentera visit dates clear.
The obligation to request the permit applies to both cars and motorcycles and scooters, with each vehicle type having a different fee.
In order to discourage the access of private vehicles, the Consell de Formentera imposes daily rates, as well as minimum rates, which you can find in the following table.
June and September:
Car Rate: €6.00/day, with a minimum amount of €30.00
Motorcycle Rate (motorcycles and scooters): €3.00/day, with a minimum amount of €15.00
July and August:
Car Rate: €9.00/day, with a minimum amount of €45.00
Motorcycle Rate (motorcycles and scooters): €4.50/day, with a minimum amount of €22.50
A 50% discount is applied to the fee for hybrid vehicles.
Even with the obligation to request the permit, the following vehicle categories do not pay the fee:
Electric vehicles.
Vehicles of residents of the Balearic Islands.
Vehicles of individuals owning a second residence in Formentera.
Access and circulation of quads and caravans are prohibited in Formentera due to various reasons. Quads are prohibited from accessing Formentera because these vehicles are considered to often cause significant damage to the island’s road network, especially on dirt roads that are common in Formentera to access its beaches and rural areas.
The prohibition of access for caravans and motorhomes is due to the island’s policy of not allowing camping. Formentera lacks designated spaces for this activity, meaning there are no suitable facilities for caravan and motorhome parking. The prohibition applies to both public and private land.
The answer is clear and direct from the Consell de Formentera. No, vehicles rented outside of Formentera are prohibited from accessing the island during the period between June 1st and September 30th.
Furthermore, this prohibition and subsequent penalty to the driver would occur even in the hypothetical case of having processed and received the permit through the Formentera.eco website. Therefore, if you have a rented vehicle in Ibiza, whether it’s a car or a motorcycle, and you intend to spend a day in Formentera, do not even think about taking it on the ferry because the joke could cost you dearly.
On our blog, we have a post with recommendations for those who want to explore Formentera in a day, where we provide tips on how to prepare for that day and enjoy the island at the best price and without surprises.

The road network in Formentera is equipped with traffic control cameras and license plate readers that allow verification of whether our car or motorcycle has authorization to circulate on the island at that time.
If the appropriate authorization is not obtained, the system will process the stipulated penalty, which will be notified to us after a certain period through the tax collection office, which will proceed to collect it through the administrative channel it deems appropriate, depending on the nationality and circumstances of each vehicle.
Penalties for not complying with the obligation to circulate with the necessary permit have a minimum amount of €1,000 and can reach up to €10,000 depending on the circumstances of each offender.

I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
