This winter, Formentera has witnessed the birth of  an innovative musical project that is making waves on social media. Introducing Arredefolk, a band that debuted on December 26 with a concert in Sant Francesc and has since made a powerful entrance into the island’s music scene with a fresh and original proposal.

In just four days, their first song has reached 50,000 plays on social media, becoming a viral sensation that has taken the four band members by surprise. This unexpected success highlights the growing interest in the fusion of traditional music with contemporary sounds, as well as the group’s ability to connect with audiences through their energy and creativity.

This project stands out for blending traditional sounds of Formentera, such as castanets (castanyoles), espasí, drum (tambor), and flaüta, with an electronic base—creating an energetic and festive rhythm.

The combination of these elements produces an innovative contrast, where the island’s cultural essence is reinterpreted through a modern lens, bringing Formentera’s musical roots to a wider and more diverse audience. The music video, which you can watch at the end of this article, was filmed inside a car as they drove along the Es Caló de Sant Agustí stretch, reminiscent of James Corden’s famous Carpool Karaoke format.

Who Are Arredefolk?

Arredefolk is made up of four musicians deeply connected to Formentera’s musical tradition. María José Cardona is a well-known artist in the island’s music scene, while Geno Tur, Cristian Tur, and Pere Serra have been particularly involved in traditional music and Ball Pagès, Formentera’s folkloric dance.

The group has successfully captured the essence of tradition and taken it to the next level by experimenting with more contemporary genres. Their combination of ancestral elements and electronic sounds has resulted in a fresh and surprising sound that has captivated thousands on social media.

Blending Tradition with Modernity

One of the most striking aspects of Arredefolk’s proposal is how they seamlessly merge the old with the new. The presence of traditional instruments such as castanets, drum, and flute gives their music an unmistakable local identity, while electronic beats add an innovative twist to Formentera’s traditional sound.

This mix creates a unique musical experience, where the island’s cultural essence is reimagined with a modern and festive touch. The song’s lyrics also play a significant role, featuring a strong, expressive message that resonates with the identity and emotions of the local community.

A Carpool Karaoke-Style Music Video

The music video for their first song has been a key factor in their success. Filmed inside a car as they drive through the Es Caló de Sant Agustí stretch, the setting is reminiscent of the popular Carpool Karaoke format by James Corden. This fun and dynamic approach has contributed to the video’s rapid viral spread on social media.

María José Cardona admitted that the video’s success took the group by surprise. While they believed in their concept, they never expected their first song to gain such traction in such a short time. And, as expected, this warm reception has only motivated them to continue exploring new fusions between Formentera’s traditional music and electronic beats.

As they themselves put it, their goal is to keep creating songs that mix authentic island sounds with modern rhythms—and in their own words: “the crazier, the better”

I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
