Formentera, May 30, 2026
Formentera will once again promote astronomical outreach with a new edition of Formentera Mira al Cel, a programme that will bring knowledge of the universe closer to residents and visitors through a series of nighttime observation events. The initiative will offer the opportunity to enjoy some of the best conditions for stargazing in a privileged Mediterranean setting.
The 2026 programme will include several sessions held between June and October, during which participants will be able to observe different celestial bodies using telescopes and with the support of astronomy specialists. The activities will take place at two of the island’s most iconic locations, chosen for their outstanding skywatching conditions.
The programme is organised by the Consell Insular de Formentera and will be carried out by the Associació Astronòmica de Formentera, which will guide the observations and provide informative explanations about the astronomical phenomena visible during each session.
With this initiative, the island strengthens its commitment to astrotourism and to promoting cultural and scientific activities linked to the natural environment. Formentera’s low levels of light pollution will once again become one of the main attractions for those wishing to discover the secrets of the night sky.
Moon Observation
One of the programme’s main focuses will be Moon observation. The sessions will take place in the surroundings of Molí Vell de la Mola, a location offering ideal conditions for observing the lunar surface in great detail.
During these events, attendees will be able to observe craters, seas, and other characteristic features of our natural satellite through the association’s telescopes.
The scheduled dates for the lunar observation sessions are:
• June 21, 2026
• July 21, 2026
• August 21, 2026
• September 21, 2026
Deep-Sky Objects
The Can Marroig Interpretation Centre will host the sessions dedicated to deep-sky observation, a type of stargazing that allows participants to discover some of the most fascinating objects in the universe beyond our solar system.
Participants will have the opportunity to observe galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, and other celestial objects that cannot normally be seen with the naked eye. The observations will be accompanied by educational explanations to help participants better understand the structure and vast scale of the cosmos.
The sessions scheduled at Can Marroig will take place on the following dates:
• June 12, 2026
• July 10, 2026
• September 12, 2026
• October 9, 2026
For Residents and Visitors
This free initiative is aimed at anyone interested in astronomy, regardless of their prior knowledge. Both enthusiasts and complete beginners will be able to enjoy an experience designed to make scientific knowledge accessible in a simple and engaging way.
The use of telescopes will allow participants to observe different celestial objects in greater detail, while the explanations provided by members of the Associació Astronòmica de Formentera will help them better understand the phenomena observed during each session.
Astrotourism in Formentera
The new edition of Formentera Mira al Cel will help strengthen the island’s reputation as an ideal destination for astronomical observation. The combination of natural landscapes, low light pollution, and Formentera’s clear skies provides exceptional conditions for this type of activity.
In addition to encouraging interest in science and astronomy, the programme will highlight the island’s natural heritage from a different perspective, promoting sustainable experiences that complement the traditional tourist offering during the summer months and early autumn.
I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
