The Formentera Governing Board dismisses the president’s proposal on beach kiosks
In a decision made on March 22, 2024, the Governing Board of the Consell Insular de Formentera has decided to reject the proposal presented by the president of the Consell and coastal advisor, Llorenç Córdoba, regarding the allocation of beach kiosks. As reported by the island’s communication department, Córdoba’s proposal advocated for declaring the competition for the eight coastal kiosks for the 2022-2027 seasons “unsuccessful.”
Sa Unió has explained that its councillors have not accepted the inclusion of Córdoba’s proposal in the agenda of the Board, arguing that they received the information late and did not have enough time to analyze it. In response, the Consell has announced a new session of the Governing Board for Monday, March 25, 2024, convened by the president, to address this issue.
Public tender declared ‘unsuccessful”
According to the statement from the Consell, Córdoba’s proposal is based on a report from the island’s legal services, dated March 21, 2024, as well as other external legal reports commissioned by the Formentera Island Council itself. The statement also includes statements from Córdoba, who regrets his government colleagues’ refusal to consider the proposal.
The legal report highlights that none of the bidders who participated in the tender submitted a real proposal regarding the necessary personnel to cover the working hours of the beach kiosks, which would imply a violation of current labor regulations. Therefore, it is concluded that the tender should be declared unsuccessful and a new set of technical specifications should be approved.
The decision of the Governing Board has sparked controversy, as some members accuse the president of acting without transparency. However, Córdoba defends his position by arguing that he has provided all the necessary information and that the decision is based on solid legal reports.
The future of the allocation of the beach kiosks now rests in the hands of the next session of the Governing Board, where clear and definitive decisions are expected to be made regarding an issue that is causing concern and controversy among the island’s residents and regular visitors to Formentera.
