La Savina – Sant Ferran Road

Comprehensive Rehabilitation

Formentera, 26 February 2026

The Consell de Formentera is beginning preliminary works this week for the road surface rehabilitation project on the PM-820, along the stretch between La Savina and the Repsol petrol station near Sant Ferran. This initiative has become one of the most significant road infrastructure projects currently underway on the island.

The project is being promoted through the Department of Economy, Territory and Infrastructure and has been awarded to Islasfalto SL for 2,619,952.86 euros. The planned execution period is four months, under the road agreement signed with the Government of the Balearic Islands.

The PM-820 handles a large share of Formentera’s daily traffic, both from residents and visitors. For this reason, the project addresses the need to modernise and strengthen a key route for the island’s connectivity.

This marks the first comprehensive structural intervention on this stretch after years in which only occasional maintenance work had been carried out. The project makes it possible to undertake an overall upgrade of the road surface and enhance the safety and functionality of the road.

Four kilometres

The works include the full rehabilitation of the road surface and shoulders over nearly four kilometres. In addition, horizontal and vertical signage will be updated to meet current traffic needs.
The project also includes the underground installation of utility services, the replacement of speed bumps, and the protection of existing drainage structures. At the same time, the stormwater network will be modernised in order to optimise rainwater runoff and prevent potential issues
The Consell has highlighted that this project represents a decisive step towards consolidating a safer, more modern road network adapted to the volume of traffic recorded on the island throughout the year.

Porto Saler junction

One of the key elements of the project is the intervention at the Porto Saler junction. At this location, the road gradient will be corrected to improve visibility and facilitate vehicle merging manoeuvres.
In addition, the drainage system will be reorganised and two solar-powered digital speed display signs will be installed. These measures will reinforce road safety on one of the most sensitive stretches of the road.
The initial phase includes the preparatory works necessary to ensure the proper execution of the subsequent resurfacing, particularly regarding the underground installation of services.

Start of the summer season

Even under the best-case scenario and if the planned schedule is met, the works will coincide with the start of the summer season. Throughout the month of June, traffic along this key stretch of the island will be affected for both residents and tourists.
Coinciding with one of the busiest periods of the year may lead to possible delays, temporary diversions and traffic restrictions. This situation will require journeys to be planned further in advance due to the likelihood of congestion.
For this reason, all road users will need to exercise extra caution and remain especially patient while the works are underway. Public cooperation will be essential to minimise disruption and ensure safety along this stretch of Formentera.

I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
