Formentera, September 12, 2025
The usually peaceful rhythm of life in Formentera was disrupted last Thursday by an incident that kept both residents and law enforcement on high alert. A 38-year-old man was arrested after making a series of threats and displaying violent behavior while carrying what appeared to be a firearm.
The events unfolded in the village of Sant Ferran, where several pedestrians raised the alarm upon seeing the man walking down a public street with a pistol in his hand. Public concern escalated quickly when the suspect began shouting at and intimidating those who crossed his path, even entering some establishments with the same aggressive attitude.
Local Police immediately alerted the Guardia Civil, which launched a search operation in the area. Officers coordinated a sweep to locate the suspect, while witnesses continued to provide updates on his movements.
The incident reached a highly tense climax: when Guardia Civil officers finally intercepted him, the man pulled the weapon from his waistband and pointed it at the agents, threatening to open fire. He was eventually subdued and arrested without any injuries being reported.
Fake Weapon, Real Alarm
The swift coordination between local residents, the Local Police, and the Guardia Civil allowed for an effective response to a situation that caused widespread concern. The search operation carried out around Sant Ferran proved crucial in locating the suspect within minutes.
Although the weapon turned out to be a replica, the suspect’s behavior was considered extremely serious. As the Guardia Civil reminded the public, this type of conduct can have fatal consequences, as it forces law enforcement to respond as though the weapon were real.
Charges Filed Against the Suspect
The man was charged with making threats, serious public disorder, and assaulting law enforcement officers. The case has been referred to judicial authorities, who will determine his legal status in the coming days.
The incident highlighted the importance of cooperation between citizens and security forces, as well as the need for swift action in situations that endanger public safety on the island. Even though the weapon was not real, the fear experienced by both residents and officers revealed the serious consequences such actions can have.
