Es Copinar Beach Cordoned Off

Formentera, 7 August 2024
In recent days, authorities in Formentera have taken action at one of the island’s most visited beaches, Es Copinar, to ensure the safety of beachgoers. The intervention involved marking off a specific section of the shoreline where cracks in the rocks have been detected, with the aim of restricting access and preventing possible accidents.
The operation, carried out by the Consell Insular’s fire brigade, is part of an action protocol designed to minimize risks in natural areas with high tourist traffic. This quick response is intended to reduce exposure to danger, especially during peak season, when human pressure on these areas increases dramatically.
Es Copinar beach was already the scene of a tragic accident in 2024, when a rockfall claimed the life of a baby and seriously injured her father.
This new preventive episode reignites the debate about safety in natural areas exposed to geological risks and heavy footfall, where both institutions and individuals must act with caution.
The Consell Insular de Formentera’s fire brigade recently responded in the Es Copinar area, next to the Hotel Riu La Mola, after lifeguards reported the appearance of cracks in the rocks. The team cordoned off the area with ropes and installed visible signage warning of the danger and prohibiting access.
The operation, carried out by two personnel and two service vehicles, was activated under the standard protocol for this type of incident. The main goal: to eliminate any possibility of access to the unstable area and thereby prevent further tragedies.
The Consell Insular emphasized that the recent intervention is part of a protocol aimed at preventing incidents and protecting both the public and the natural environment. According to the institution, proactive measures are being applied, particularly in sensitive tourist spots like Es Copinar.
Authorities are also urging residents and visitors to strictly respect the installed signage and avoid entering restricted areas. Collective cooperation is key to avoiding further accidents in natural locations that, while idyllic, are not free of risk.
In July 2024, Es Copinar was the scene of a deadly accident that deeply affected both locals and tourists. A two-month-old baby lost her life and her father was injured when a rockfall struck them as they were enjoying a day at the beach.
The family filed a complaint against several institutions, claiming the risk was known and no action was taken in time. The case, currently being handled by a court in Ibiza, raises questions about the responsibility of various authorities in preventing such incidents.

I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
