Tourist Satisfaction Survey 2024

The recent 2024 Tourism Barometer, based on 1,800 surveys analyzed by the Data Observatory of the Consell de Formentera, provides a clear picture of who visited the island, how they organized their trip, and their overall impressions. It is worth noting that in the previous year, a total of 2,519 surveys were conducted, representing a nearly 30% decrease in participation.

Regarding the origin of tourists, Spaniards made up the majority, representing half of all visitors. Italians also played a significant role, accounting for nearly a third of the total, reflecting the traditional affinity of Italian travelers for Formentera.

In smaller but still noteworthy proportions, Germans comprised 5% of visitors, followed by Portuguese 4%, while French and British tourists each made up 3%. These figures confirm that Formentera remains an international destination, albeit with a strong presence of tourists from Southern Europe.

The profile of visitors also reveals interesting insights. Women made up the majority, accounting for 59% of all visitors in 2024. Additionally, young tourism continues to dominate, with 52% of visitors being under 45 years old. Most tourists traveled with companions, as 82% enjoyed the island with family, a partner, or friends.

Loyal visitors year after year

One of the most striking findings is the split between first-time visitors and returning tourists. 51% of respondents stated that it was their first time on the island, while 49% were repeat visitors. This balance highlights the strong loyalty of those who, after experiencing Formentera, choose to return.

The length of stay also varies depending on the type of visitor. 89% of tourists stayed overnight, while 11% were day-trippers. Among this latter group, the majority (80%) arrived from Ibiza, while the remaining 20% traveled from the port of Dénia.

Word of mouth plays a crucial role in attracting visitors to Formentera, with 62% of respondents stating that they learned about the island through recommendations from friends or family. This underscores the positive impact of shared travel experiences.

Regarding travel planning, 47% of tourists preferred to book directly through company websites, while 39% relied on metasearch engines. When it comes to booking in advance, nearly 44% of tourists planned their trip at least three months ahead, indicating a tendency towards structured vacation planning.

Where do our visitors stay?

Hotels and hostels were the most popular choice, with 48% of visitors opting for these accommodations. However, apartments and rental homes also saw high demand, attracting 44% of tourists.

As for preferred areas to stay, Es Pujols took the top spot with 40% preference, followed by Migjorn (20%). The average length of stay was 5.7 nights, nearly identical to the previous year (5.8 nights), indicating stable lodging habits.

In terms of spending, tourists in Formentera spent an average of €183 per day, while day-trippers spent approximately €119. This daily expenditure was distributed as follows:

  • Accommodation: €169/day
  • Dining: €119/day
  • Transportation on the island: €113/day
  • Ferry or travel to the island: €192
  • Other expenses (shopping, leisure): €54

These figures highlight Formentera’s high-end appeal, reflecting both its exclusivity and the quality of services offered.

The most highly rated aspects of the Formentera experience were its landscapes, nature, beaches, cleanliness, and the quality of accommodations. However, visitors also pointed out areas for improvement, notably high prices, the condition of rural roads, and the limited nightlife options.

The Tourism Councilor, Artal Mayans, emphasized the high level of tourist satisfaction with Formentera’s offerings, reaffirming its status as a leading Mediterranean destination. He also explained that changes have been made to the Tourism Barometer’s methodology to make it more effective, eliminating repetitive questions and focusing on identifying areas for improvement.
