Chiringuito Bartolo Formentera: Changes in 2024

What set the old Chiringuito Bartolo apart was its elevated structure on pillars, its terrace over the sand, and especially its distinctive blue color, which made it stand out from other chiringuitos in Formentera. The terms of the new lease prevent Chiringuito Bartolo from reclaiming the unique color that identified it for so many years, as the lease conditions explicitly banned the use of paints to treat the wood.

Similarly, the covered terrace area for the public will be located at the left end of the kiosk, instead of extending over the beach as it did before. This change is necessary to comply with the new land plan set by the Coastal Demarcation of the Balearic Government. However, it will still offer stunning sea views at Es Copinar Beach.

Another change to note for those familiar with Chiringuito Bartolo from previous visits is that the old path leading to the chiringuito, where a number of cars and motorcycles could be parked, has been permanently blocked by the landowner, who plans to build a house in that area.

Quiosco Bartolo Formentera – Background

Bartolo Escandell, his wife Manoli, and their children Adán and Diego run and manage the legendary Chiringuito Bartolo. Bartolo took over the kiosk in 1976 when he rented it at just 18 years old from the previous owner, Joan Torres. Bartolo later acquired full ownership after completing his military service at the age of 21.

Until 1979, it was called Chiringuito Monica’s Cabanas, and since then, it has been known as Kiosko de Bartolo.

Following a very complex bidding process for the new beach kiosks in Formentera, the final decision of the selection committee awarded the management of the chiringuito to Bartolo Escandell. He is the only former owner who managed to renew the lease until 2030, continuing a tradition that links Bartolo with this kiosk and the beach where it has been located for nearly 50 years.

I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
