How to reach Torre de La Gavina?

Torre de La Gavina is located on the west coast of Formentera, on the cliffs of the same name and on the edge of the Ses Salines Natural Park. The tower is located in an area far from any paved road and its visit is probably the most complicated of all the defense towers of Formentera.

There are three options to get to the tower:

  • From Can Marroig

Arriving at the Can Marroig public estate along the s´Estany des Peix road, we leave our vehicle parked and walk towards the coast following the marked indications that will lead us to the Torre de La Gavina which is located approximately 1 , 7 kilometers away.

  • Through Porto Saler path

Although somewhat difficult to find, if you do not have the help of Google Maps, there is a path that leads to the vicinity of Punta La Gavina and the houses built there. It is one of the many bifurcations on the Porto Saler road, which is public all the way to the sea, so don’t worry about traveling through it, whether on foot, by car, motorcycle or bicycle.

  • From Cala Saona

Once you have reached the beach of Cala Saona you will have to stand on the cliffs on the right (facing the sea) and start walking north along the coast.
From there, in the distance, you can already see the Torre de La Gavina, which is about 3 kilometers away.

Features

Torre de Punta Gavina, like the rest of the defense towers of Formentera, was built in the 18th century, between 1762 and 1763
It has two floors and the access to it is located on the first floor to facilitate its defense against attacks.
It stands on a circular base and its body is frustoconical. It also has a sentry box and parapet and is a bit smaller than the Torre de Punta Prima.

Views to Ibiza and Es Vedrà

The Torre de La Gavina is located in a truly wild environment, with scant low vegetation, bush type, and in a space where stones cover the ground.
If you are a lover of ornithology, the area offers you the possibility of seeing the odd bird that in other areas of the island will be much more difficult to see or hear, and what to say about the views you have once you get to the Tower of La Gavina.
It is true that the visibility, the day you go, will mark that you can enjoy the panoramic offered by the situation of the tower but if your visit coincides with a clear day and low humidity, you will have the mountains of Ibiza and, above all, the imposing silhouette of Es Vedrá and Es Vedranell as faithful bodyguards of La Torre de La Gavina.

I’m Ramón Tur, the person behind everything written and photographed on this website about Formentera. I discovered the island in 1972 when my parents, aboard the mythical Joven Dolores, took me on vacation from Ibiza for the first time, and it was love at first sight that has only grown stronger over time, making Formentera my place of residence for many years now.
